Synopsis

Yorick Studio 20—Theatre as a Tool for Intercultural Dialogue is a monograph on the independent theatre Yorick Studio, presenting its history, evolution, activities, and cultural impact over more than two decades of existence within the cultural landscape of Târgu-Mureș and Romania.|
riven by my restless, curious, and experimental nature—and probably because I was dissatisfied with what was happening at the time at the National Theatre in Târgu-Mureș, as well as with the structure of all institutionalized theatres—in 2004 I founded an independent theatre in an unconventional space: the basement of the Butchers’ Bastion in the Târgu-Mureș Fortress. And—true to my reverence and admiration for clowns—I named it Yorick Stúdió. Today, more than 20 years after its founding, Yorick Stúdió is one of the longest-running independent theatres in the country. At the heart of its work lies intercultural dialogue; other key pillars include collaborating with mixed teams of creators, commissioning Romanian and Hungarian playwrights to write new plays on current themes, multilingualism, and performances with subtitles in Hungarian and Romanian.
In the first chapter of the book, I analyzed the context—both local and national—surrounding the emergence of independent theatres and new playwriting; I presented the main stages in the development of  Yorick Studio, as well as the managerial approaches and strategies upon which its repertoire and relationship with the audience were built. The second part serves as an important theatrical archive, providing an overview of all the productions staged here between 2004 and 2025, as well as the critical reception they received and the awards they won. And in the third part, I’ve given the floor to the most important collaborators, supporters, and friends of the Yorick Studio, both Romanian and Hungarian: actors, directors, playwrights, translators, theatre critics, and journalists. Their testimonies aim to demonstrate the theatre’s extraordinary ability to bring people from different cultures closer together through open dialogue.
