Naguib Mahfouz – Nobel Prize in Literature laureate (1988) and an exemplary figure of Arabic literature – is presented in this volume in a lesser-known guise: that of playwright. The play Project for Discussion, published here in a bilingual French-Romanian edition with a preface by Tarik Abou Soughaire, foregrounds explicit metatheatricality: the Playwright, Director, Actor, Actress, and Critic vie for primacy in relation to theatrical creation, interpretation, and audience expectations. The text rewrites – through an original stage idiom – the tension between the theatre’s text-centred tradition and the stage-centred vision that Mahfouz examines with ironic scrutiny.
